Create a Meta Ads Custom Audience From a Google Sheet Customer List

The Scenario

You are a CRM manager at a DTC brand. Black Friday is six weeks out. You have a workbook of 5,000 high-value customers — email addresses in column A, first name in column B, lifetime value in column C — exported from your CRM this morning.

You need a Meta Ads custom audience built from that list so your media buyer can start configuring the retargeting campaign. The audience needs to exist in Meta Ads before end of day so ad set targeting can be set up tomorrow.

The bad version of this afternoon:

  • Download the workbook as a CSV
  • Log into Meta Ads Business Manager
  • Navigate to Audiences, click Create Audience, choose Customer List
  • Upload the CSV, wait for processing
  • Realize the column order was wrong, re-upload
  • It is 5 PM and the audience is still processing.

One prompt from inside the workbook skips the manual upload flow entirely.

The Easy Way: One Prompt in SheetXAI

SheetXAI is an AI agent inside your Excel workbook that can read your customer list and push it directly to the Meta Ads API to create a custom audience, no CSV download or Business Manager navigation required.

Open the SheetXAI sidebar and type:

Take the email addresses in column A of this workbook and create a Meta Ads customer list custom audience named 'High Value Customers - BF 2025' in our ad account. Write the new audience ID into cell D1 when done.

SheetXAI reads the emails from column A, calls the Meta Ads API to create the custom audience, uploads the hashed list, and writes the audience ID into D1. Your media buyer has the ID before your next meeting.

What You Get

A confirmed Meta Ads custom audience:

  • Audience name — exactly as you specified
  • Source — the email list from column A
  • Audience ID — written into D1 as confirmation and as input for the next step

The audience ID in D1 is what your media buyer pastes into the ad set targeting screen. No searching through Business Manager for the right audience name, no confusion about which version is the latest upload.

What If the Data Is Not Quite Ready

Customer lists are never perfectly clean exports.

When emails and phone numbers should both be included

Meta matches more users when both identifiers are provided. Your workbook has both.

Create a Meta Ads custom audience named 'Q4 Buyers' using the customer emails in column A and phone numbers in column B for our ad account. Write the new audience ID into cell D1.

When you want to exclude customers already in a suppression list

Before uploading your retargeting list, strip out anyone in your suppression tab.

Read the email list in column A of the Retargeting tab. Remove any email that also appears in column A of the Suppression tab. Then create a Meta Ads custom audience named 'BF Retargeting - Cleaned' from the remaining emails and write the audience ID into cell D1.

When the list needs to be segmented by LTV tier before upload

High-LTV and mid-LTV customers should be in separate audiences for different creative treatment.

Read the customer list in this workbook. Customers with lifetime value in column C above $500 are Tier 1; those between $100 and $500 are Tier 2. Create two separate Meta Ads custom audiences: 'BF 2025 - Tier 1' from Tier 1 emails and 'BF 2025 - Tier 2' from Tier 2 emails. Write the Tier 1 audience ID into D1 and the Tier 2 audience ID into D2.

When the full workflow runs end to end in one prompt

Pull the customer list from your CRM, clean it, segment it, and upload to Meta Ads without touching a CSV.

Pull all customers from our CRM with total spend above $200 in the last 12 months. Write their email addresses and lifetime values into columns A and B of this workbook. Remove any email that also appears in the Suppression tab column A. Then create a Meta Ads custom audience named 'High Value - Active' from the remaining emails and write the audience ID into D1.

The pattern: the workbook is the staging layer between your CRM and Meta Ads. You never download a CSV or navigate Business Manager manually.
