Pull Global Crypto Market Metrics Into a Google Sheet

The Scenario

You're a market analyst at a crypto media company. Every Friday afternoon you publish a "Weekly Crypto Pulse" report — a one-page summary of where the global market stands. The inputs are the same every week: total market cap, BTC dominance, ETH dominance, total 24-hour trading volume, and the number of active coins. They go into cells B2 through B6 of the "Summary" tab, which feeds a chart and a written template.

It's Thursday afternoon and your editor has just moved the publication deadline to Friday 9 AM.

The bad version:

  • Navigate to CoinMarketCap's global charts page, read the total market cap off the chart (which updates in real time and is slightly different every time you look), copy it into B2.
  • Find BTC dominance on the same page — it's shown as a percentage in a different section — and copy it to B3.
  • Repeat for ETH dominance, total volume, and active coin count, each on different parts of the page or requiring a different navigation step.
  • Format each value consistently: some come as "$2.3T" and need to be entered as raw numbers; some are already percentages but formatted wrong for the chart.

This isn't complex work. But it's four different page sections, five different formatting decisions, and a deadline you moved up. The part of the job that matters — the written analysis — is sitting there waiting for the inputs to be filled in first.

The Easy Way: One Prompt in SheetXAI

SheetXAI lives inside your Google Sheet and connects directly to CoinMarketCap's global metrics endpoint. One prompt and the summary cells are populated.

Fetch CoinMarketCap's global market metrics and write total market cap into cell B2 of the "Summary" tab, BTC dominance into B3, ETH dominance into B4, total 24h volume into B5, and the number of active cryptocurrencies into B6

What You Get

  • B2: total crypto market cap in USD (raw number, not abbreviated).
  • B3: BTC dominance as a decimal percentage — ready for a percentage-formatted cell.
  • B4: ETH dominance, same format.
  • B5: total 24-hour trading volume in USD.
  • B6: count of active cryptocurrencies tracked on CoinMarketCap.

What If the Data Is Not Quite Ready

The cells have existing values from last week and I want to log them before overwriting

Before writing new values into cells B2 through B6 of the "Summary" tab, copy the current values into the corresponding cells in column C with a timestamp in column D, then fetch CoinMarketCap's global market metrics and write total market cap into B2, BTC dominance into B3, ETH dominance into B4, 24h volume into B5, and active coin count into B6

The chart needs week-over-week change calculated too

Fetch CoinMarketCap's current global market metrics and write total market cap into B2, BTC dominance into B3, ETH dominance into B4, 24h volume into B5, and active coin count into B6 of the "Summary" tab; then calculate the percent change from the prior values in column C and write the results into column E

I want the data in a horizontal layout for a different chart template

Fetch CoinMarketCap's global market metrics and write total market cap into cell B1, BTC dominance into C1, ETH dominance into D1, 24h volume into E1, and active coin count into F1 of the "Dashboard" tab

Pull the metrics, calculate changes, flag unusual moves, and write a summary sentence

Fetch CoinMarketCap's current global market metrics; write total market cap into B2 of "Summary," BTC dominance into B3, ETH dominance into B4, 24h volume into B5, active coin count into B6; compare each value to the prior-week figures in column C; flag any metric where the week-over-week change exceeds 10% with a note in column F; and write a one-sentence summary of what moved most in cell A1

The inputs are filled, the changes are flagged, and the opening line of the report is drafted — all before you've touched the template.
